The Filipino American Heritage Month organizing committee at the University of Hawaii at Hilo invites the community to join in a celebration of Filipino culture, heritage and history during a number of events taking place on campus.
Among the scheduled activities are a film screening, lecture, Filipino studies conference, Barrio Fiesta, exhibits and a cultural night.
The colorful and entertaining Barrio Fiesta, which usually kicks off the monthlong celebration, instead will be at 5 p.m. Oct. 27 at the Campus Center Plaza.
Heritage month co-organizer Norman Arancon, associate professor of Horticulture and Affiliate Faculty of Filipino Studies, said the fiesta will serve as the opening ceremonies of the inaugural International Conference on Multidisciplinary Filipino studies. Registration is required for the two-day gathering of researchers from around the world sharing and exchanging ideas about Filipinos and the Philippines.
The Barrio Fiesta features intricately choreographed cultural dances of the Philippines performed by students of the Filipino Studies Program, Bayanihan Club and the Hilo Visayan Club.
“We will also highlight a momentous event — the signing of a memorandum of understanding of the sisterhood of Cabugao City, the Philippines, and the Big Island,” Arancon said. A delegation from Cabugao City is scheduled to attend.
Also featured will be an ongoing exhibit by Hawaii Island Filipino designer Iris Viacrusis. Some of his designs will be showcased during the Barrio Fiesta.

• 5:30 p.m. today, UCB 100, a screening of the 2016 documentary “Out Run.” Mobilizing working-class transgender hairdressers and beauty queens, the leaders of the world’s only LGBT political party wage a historic quest to elect a trans woman to the Philippine Congress.
• 11 a.m.-12:15 p.m. Oct. 24, Student Services Center, W201, talk titled “Blanketed by Blame: A Community-Based Approach to Eliminating Domestic Violence,” by Jennifer Solidum Rose, director of the University of Hawaii Office of Institutional Equity.
• Oct. 27-28 (registration required), UCB classrooms, First International Conference on Multidisciplinary Filipino Studies.
• 5 p.m. Oct. 27, Campus Center Plaza, Barrio Fiesta
• 6-8 p.m. Nov. 3, Hale Kehau turnaround, Pinoy Cultural Night, celebration culminates events.
• Special exhibits on display at Mookini Library throughout the month.
